The ulnar nerve runs from the neck, down the arm, and into the hand. At the elbow, it passes through the cubital tunnel, a narrow passageway of bone and soft tissue. Compression or irritation in this area can disrupt nerve signals, causing symptoms.
Numbness and Tingling: Commonly felt in the ring and little fingers.
Pain: Discomfort around the inside of the elbow and sometimes extending down the forearm.
Weakness: Difficulty gripping objects or performing fine motor tasks.
Clawing of the Fingers: Severe cases may cause a claw-like deformity.
Elbow Pressure: Prolonged leaning on the elbow.
Repetitive Elbow Bending: Activities requiring frequent flexion.
Injury: Trauma or fractures affecting the elbow.
Workplace Activities: Jobs involving repetitive motions or elbow support.
Medical Conditions: Diabetes, arthritis, or previous elbow injuries.
Sports: Activities like throwing or racket sports.
Our thorough assessment includes:
Clinical Examination
Testing sensation, muscle strength, and reflexes.
Tinel’s Sign Test
Light tapping over the ulnar nerve to detect irritation.
Imaging Tests
Ultrasound or MRI: To visualize the nerve and surrounding structures.
Nerve Conduction Studies
Assessing the speed and strength of nerve signals.
Activity Modification
Avoiding prolonged elbow flexion or pressure.
Ergonomic Adjustments
Adapting workspaces to reduce strain on the elbow.
Pain Relief
NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for swelling and discomfort.
Splinting
Night splints to keep the elbow slightly extended and reduce compression.
Physiotherapy
Nerve Gliding Exercises: To improve nerve mobility.
Strengthening Exercises: To enhance muscle support around the elbow.
Manual Therapy: To reduce soft tissue tension and improve joint mobility.
For severe or persistent cases, surgery may be necessary to relieve pressure on the nerve. Common procedures include:
Ulnar Nerve Decompression: Removing obstructions or expanding the cubital tunnel.
Nerve Transposition: Relocating the nerve to a less compressive position.
We offer individualized rehabilitation plans, including:
Post-Surgical Recovery: Ensuring safe and effective healing.
Gradual Return to Activity: Customized exercises to restore strength and coordination.
Preventive Education: Strategies to minimize recurrence.
Avoid prolonged elbow pressure or repetitive motions.
Maintain proper posture and ergonomics.
Use padding or supports during high-risk activities.
