Lymphoedema is a long-term condition where lymph fluid accumulates in body tissues, leading to swelling (most commonly in an arm or leg). At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, we provide individualised, evidence-informed support to help manage swelling, protect skin health, and improve comfort and function in everyday life.
Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health offers a range of therapy services and specialised supports. You can browse by therapy area, explore specialised services, or learn more about the facilities and equipment we use in-clinic .
Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system (which helps drain fluid and support immune function) is damaged, underdeveloped, or obstructed, resulting in swelling. Lymphoedema may affect:
One or both arms
One or both legs
Other areas depending on the cause and medical history
Lymphoedema is usually considered a chronic condition, but symptoms can often be improved and controlled with the right management plan.
Symptoms can vary, but may include:
Visible swelling in a limb or affected area
Feeling of heaviness, tightness or fullness
Reduced range of motion due to swelling
Skin changes (tight, shiny, thickened skin)
Discomfort or aching
Increased risk of skin infections such as cellulitis
If swelling is new, rapidly worsening, or associated with redness/heat/fever, seek urgent medical review (see “When to seek urgent help” below).
There are two broad categories:
A congenital/genetic condition where the lymphatic system develops differently. It can appear at birth or later in life.
More common; occurs when lymphatic drainage is affected by an external factor such as:
Cancer treatment (surgery or radiation affecting lymph nodes/vessels)
Infection (including cellulitis; filariasis in some settings)
Obesity (increased load on lymphatic drainage)
Injury, trauma or surgery
Chronic venous insufficiency/long-term venous issues
At Palms, assessment may include:
Review of your health history (including surgeries, cancer treatment, injuries, infections)
Physical examination of the affected area (swelling pattern, skin changes, function)
Functional assessment (mobility, strength, impact on daily tasks)
In some cases, imaging or diagnostic testing may be organised through your GP/specialist (e.g., to assess lymphatic/vascular factors).
Palms offers allied health services from our Malaga & Noranda clinics.
This can be helpful for clients who need a more coordinated approach across mobility, physical function, communication, sensory needs or everyday participation.
Support for daily living skills, sensory needs, functional independence, equipment, home supports & participation at home, school, work & in the community.
Assessment, diagnosis & treatment for pain, injuries, rehabilitation, mobility, strength & physical function across all ages.
Clinical exercise programs to support chronic condition management, strength, mobility, fitness, rehabilitation & function.
Assessment & therapy for communication, speech, language, social communication, voice & swallowing support.
Lymphoedema cannot always be “cured,” but a structured plan can often reduce symptoms and lower the risk of complications. Management is individualised and may include:
Compression garments (e.g., sleeves, stockings) may help support fluid return and reduce swelling. We can provide guidance on:
When compression may be helpful
How to use compression safely (especially around exercise and heat)
Referral pathways for garment fitting where needed
Some people benefit from hands-on lymphatic techniques as part of a broader plan. Where clinically appropriate and within clinician scope/training, this may include manual lymphatic drainage-style techniques to support lymphatic flow and comfort.
Gentle, graded exercise can support lymph flow, mobility and function. Programs are tailored to your capacity and goals and may include:
Range of motion and mobility work
Strength and conditioning (graded carefully)
Walking and functional activity progressions
Balance and mobility confidence strategies (when needed)
Exercise Physiology: https://www.palmsphysiotherapy.com.au/services/exercise-physiology
Skin care is a key part of lymphoedema management because swelling can increase infection risk. We may provide education on:
Daily skin inspection and hygiene
Moisturising and protecting skin integrity
Reducing injury risk (cuts, bites, burns)
What to do if infection is suspected
Some people use pneumatic compression devices as part of their broader management plan. If you are considering this, we can discuss suitability and coordinate with your medical team as appropriate.
If lymphoedema affects daily tasks, OT may assist with:
Daily living strategies (self-care, household tasks, work routines)
Energy conservation and pacing
Equipment/environment modifications (when clinically indicated)
Practical strategies for managing heaviness and fatigue impact
Occupational Therapy: https://www.palmsphysiotherapy.com.au/services/occupational-therapy
Find the right support by discipline, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, exercise physiology and other allied health services.
Many people benefit from:
Monitoring swelling changes over time
Staying active with graded, tolerable exercise
Maintaining a healthy weight where possible and appropriate
Wearing compression as advised
Protecting the skin and acting early on signs of infection
We can help you build a realistic plan you can follow long-term.
Seek urgent GP/ED care if you have:
Sudden increase in swelling, redness, heat, or severe pain
Fever, chills, or feeling unwell (possible cellulitis/infection)
New shortness of breath or chest pain
New swelling in one leg (especially with pain/warmth) — needs urgent medical assessment to rule out serious causes
