PALMS PHYSIOTHERAPY & ALLIED HEALTH
Exercisse Physiologists & Allied Health Therapies for Department of Veterans Affairs clients - Clinic & Mobile Visits
At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, we provide exercise physiology services for eligible Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) clients in Perth. We offer appointments in clinic and, where suitable, through mobile visits, with exercise programs tailored to the person’s goals, current function, health background and day-to-day needs.
Exercise physiology may be helpful for eligible veterans and members of the veteran community who need support with strength, endurance, mobility, physical function, reconditioning, movement confidence, and long-term condition management where exercise is clinically appropriate.
DVA describes exercise physiology as treatment with a strong focus on clinical exercise prescription, physical activity education and behaviour modification, particularly for chronic conditions and self-management.
Exercise physiology is an allied health service that uses individualised, clinically reasoned exercise to support people with chronic conditions, reduced physical capacity, injury recovery needs, disability-related physical limitations, and age-related changes in function.
For DVA clients, exercise physiology may be relevant where there is a clinical need for structured exercise support aimed at improving or maintaining physical function and supporting safe participation in daily life. Treatment is always based on the person’s presentation, goals and referral pathway.
Depending on the individual, exercise physiology may assist with:
Tailored exercise programs to support physical capacity, stamina and confidence with movement.
Support for goals related to walking, transfers, general conditioning, physical activity tolerance and day-to-day movement.
Exercise physiology may form part of broader support for people living with long-term health conditions where exercise is appropriate and clinically indicated. DVA’s fee schedule specifically describes exercise physiology as focusing on chronic condition treatment and transition to self-management.
Some veterans may benefit from graded exercise after illness, reduced activity, hospitalisation or a period of deconditioning, where clinically appropriate.
Older veterans may seek support to maintain strength, endurance, mobility and confidence with movement as part of healthy ageing and ongoing independence.
We offer clinic-based appointments as well as mobile exercise physiology visits, depending on the person’s needs, location and the suitability of the service.
Clinic-based exercise physiology may suit people who benefit from:
a structured rehabilitation environment
access to equipment
supervised exercise progression
a more formal treatment setting
Mobile exercise physiology may be appropriate for people who:
have difficulty travelling
prefer support in their home environment
benefit from exercise linked to everyday routines
need assessment and exercise support in the setting where they live
DVA states that eligible Veteran Card holders need a valid referral for exercise physiology. For an initial treatment cycle, the referral may come from a GP, and in some cases it can also come from a medical specialist, treating hospital doctor, or hospital discharge planner. Under DVA allied health treatment cycle arrangements, a referral generally lasts for up to 12 sessions or one year, whichever ends first. Any further treatment cycles are determined by the client’s usual GP.
At the end of a treatment cycle, allied health providers are generally required to report back to the client’s usual GP if further treatment may be needed.
DVA states that clients in receipt of a Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) payment are exempt from the treatment cycle arrangements for exercise physiology services.
DVA notes that White Card holders are generally eligible only for clinically necessary treatment for their accepted service-related conditions, rather than unrelated conditions or downstream sequelae.
Our DVA exercise physiology services may be suitable for eligible veterans who need support with:
reduced strength or endurance
deconditioning after illness or inactivity
chronic health conditions affecting physical function
mobility limitations
reduced confidence with exercise
functional goals related to physical activity and participation
healthy ageing and maintaining independence
Programs are individualised and should always reflect the person’s referral, clinical presentation and goals.
Although this page focuses on exercise physiology for DVA clients, Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health also offers a broader allied health service. Depending on the person’s needs, this may include:
Support with mobility, balance, rehabilitation, musculoskeletal issues, physical function and pain-related movement concerns.
Support with self-care, home setup, daily routines, fatigue management, assistive technology and function at home.
Support with communication, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing and mealtime concerns where relevant.
This can be helpful for veterans who need a more coordinated allied health approach across multiple areas of function.
At Palms, we aim to keep exercise physiology practical, respectful and relevant to everyday life. We focus on what matters most to the individual, whether that is:
building strength
moving more confidently
improving physical capacity
staying active and independent
managing a chronic condition with structured exercise
maintaining participation in home and community life
Our programs are tailored to the person’s needs and paced appropriately.
