PALMS PHYSIOTHERAPY & ALLIED HEALTH
Pompe disease is a rare neuromuscular condition that can affect strength, mobility, endurance, breathing, and sometimes swallowing. At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, we provide individualised, evidence-informed allied health support to help people with Pompe disease maintain function, build safe capacity, and participate in daily life as comfortably as possible—working alongside your medical team.
Pompe Disease is a rare genetic disorder caused by the deficiency of the enzyme acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA). This enzyme deficiency leads to the buildup of glycogen in the body's cells, affecting muscles and other tissues.
Symptoms of Pompe Disease include:
Muscle Weakness: Primarily in the legs, trunk, and respiratory muscles.
Breathing Problems: Reduced lung function due to weakened diaphragm and intercostal muscles.
Difficulty Walking: Progressive mobility challenges.
Fatigue: Reduced stamina and energy levels.
Feeding Issues: In infantile forms, difficulties with feeding and swallowing may occur.
Pompe Disease can manifest as infantile-onset or late-onset, with varied severity. Early diagnosis and therapy are critical to managing symptoms and enhancing quality of life.
Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health offers a range of therapy services and specialised supports. You can browse by therapy area, explore specialised services, or learn more about the facilities and equipment we use in-clinic .
Symptoms vary widely. People with Pompe disease may experience:
Proximal weakness (hips/shoulders), difficulty rising from chairs or climbing stairs
Reduced endurance and fatigue
Changes in walking speed, balance, or confidence
Difficulty with overhead activities or lifting
Shortness of breath on exertion
Reduced cough strength / difficulty clearing secretions
Sleep-related breathing issues (in some people)
Increased fatigue linked to breathing effort
Falls risk, unsteadiness, or reduced confidence on uneven ground
Difficulty with transfers (sit-to-stand, bed mobility)
Reduced independence with self-care or household tasks over time
Chewing fatigue, swallowing difficulty, or changes in voice quality can occur in some neuromuscular conditions and should be assessed if present.
If you notice new or worsening breathing symptoms, swallowing difficulty, or rapid loss of function, seek prompt medical review.
Palms offers allied health services from our Malaga & Noranda clinics.

Safe pacing during exercise and daily activity
If you experience worsening shortness of breath, morning headaches, sleep disturbance, or difficulty clearing your chest, seek medical review.
