PALMS PHYSIOTHERAPY & ALLIED HEALTH
Shin splints occur due to repetitive stress on the tibia and the surrounding connective tissues, leading to inflammation and pain. They are often linked to training errors, improper footwear, or biomechanical issues such as flat feet or overpronation.
Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health offers a range of therapy services and specialised supports. You can browse by therapy area, explore specialised services, or learn more about the facilities and equipment we use in-clinic .
Overuse and Overtraining: Increased intensity or frequency of physical activity too quickly.
Flat Feet or Overpronation: Increased stress on the tibia due to improper foot alignment.
Improper Footwear: Shoes lacking adequate support or cushioning.
Hard or Uneven Surfaces: Running on concrete or uneven terrain can increase impact stress.
Muscle Imbalances: Weakness in the calves or other lower limb muscles.
Pain along the inner edge of the tibia during or after exercise.
Swelling in the lower leg.
Tenderness when touching the shinbone.
Pain that worsens with activity and subsides with rest.
A health professional, such as a physiotherapist, will assess your medical history, activity level, and biomechanics. In severe cases, imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs may rule out stress fractures or other conditions.
Palms offers allied health services from our Malaga & Noranda clinics.
This can be helpful for clients who need a more coordinated approach across mobility, physical function, communication, sensory needs or everyday participation.
Support for daily living skills, sensory needs, functional independence, equipment, home supports & participation at home, school, work & in the community.
Assessment, diagnosis & treatment for pain, injuries, rehabilitation, mobility, strength & physical function across all ages.
Clinical exercise programs to support chronic condition management, strength, mobility, fitness, rehabilitation & function.
Assessment & therapy for communication, speech, language, social communication, voice & swallowing support.
Treatment options vary depending on symptom severity, training load, and whether there are signs suggesting a higher-risk bone stress injury. In most cases, shin splints respond well to conservative management.
Rest and Activity Modification
Reduce or temporarily stop impact activities that aggravate symptoms (commonly running and jumping).
Maintain fitness with lower-impact options where tolerated (e.g., cycling, swimming, strength training).
Use a graded return-to-running plan once symptoms settle.
Address rapid increases in running volume/intensity, hills, speed work, or hard surfaces.
Adjust weekly load and recovery to reduce “boom–bust” patterns.
A physiotherapy plan typically includes:
Calf and lower-limb strengthening: building capacity in calf complex, tibialis posterior/anterior and hip muscles.
Progressive loading for bone stress tolerance: gradually rebuilding impact tolerance (not rushing back to running).
Mobility work: addressing calf/ankle restrictions where relevant.
Gait/running technique guidance (when indicated): cadence, stride length, overstriding, and impact management.
Foot and ankle control work: improving control through midfoot and arch mechanics when relevant.
Education: symptom monitoring and a clear progression plan.
Review footwear age, cushioning, stability, and suitability for your foot type and training.
Temporary arch support or orthotics may help some people reduce tibial load—best determined after assessment.
Avoid constant swapping of shoes without a structured plan.
Ice after activity may help symptom control for some people.
Simple analgesia may be used as directed by your GP/pharmacist.
Anti-inflammatories can reduce pain for some presentations, but should be used cautiously and are not a “fix” for load-related bone stress.
May provide temporary comfort and support during day-to-day activities, while the rehab plan is addressing underlying contributors.
Shin pain is sometimes a tibial stress fracture rather than shin splints. Seek assessment promptly (and discuss imaging with your GP/physio) if you have:
Pain that becomes sharp, very localised (one spot), or worsens quickly
Pain with walking, at rest, or at night
Significant tenderness over a small area of bone
Swelling or a history of repeated flare-ups
Inability to hop on the affected leg due to pain
Rehabilitation focuses on restoring load tolerance and addressing the factors that caused the irritation in the first place. At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, rehab commonly includes:
Symptom settling phase: reduce impact load, maintain fitness with alternatives.
Strength and capacity building: calves, feet, hips, and trunk control.
Gradual impact reintroduction: walk-jog progressions, then return to continuous running.
Return-to-sport planning: progressing hills/speed only once base running is tolerated.
Monitoring and progression rules: clear guidelines for pain response and when to step back.
You can reduce recurrence risk by:
Progressing training gradually: avoid sudden jumps in volume or intensity.
Building calf/foot/hip strength: consistent strength work 2–3x/week.
Choosing appropriate footwear: replace worn shoes and match shoe type to training demands.
Varying surfaces and load: limit repeated hard-surface running early in a build.
Prioritising recovery: sleep, nutrition, and adequate rest days.
Acting early: don’t push through escalating shin pain—early management prevents progression.
