Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome, or MPS VI, is a rare genetic disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme arylsulfatase B. This enzyme deficiency results in the buildup of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in cells, leading to tissue and organ damage.
Common symptoms include:
Skeletal abnormalities: Short stature, joint stiffness, and spinal deformities.
Cardiac and respiratory issues: Heart valve problems and compromised lung function.
Vision and hearing impairments: Clouding of the cornea and potential hearing loss.
Mobility challenges: Restricted range of motion and muscle weakness.
Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach are crucial for managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
We support children, adults and older adults with disability, injury, chronic conditions, developmental concerns, communication needs, mobility challenges and rehabilitation goals.
