Edwards Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 18, is a rare chromosomal condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 18. This leads to severe developmental delays, physical abnormalities, and various medical challenges. Edwards Syndrome can affect almost every organ in the body, and individuals with this condition often require extensive medical and therapeutic care.
Severe developmental delays: Cognitive impairments and delays in reaching developmental milestones such as sitting, standing, or walking.
Physical abnormalities: These may include clenched fists with overlapping fingers, small head size, low-set ears, heart defects, and skeletal abnormalities.
Growth retardation: Children with Trisomy 18 may have low birth weight and experience slow growth after birth.
Feeding difficulties: Many individuals with Edwards Syndrome have difficulty feeding due to poor muscle tone and coordination.
Respiratory problems: Breathing difficulties, including apnea, are common and may require medical intervention.
Palms offers allied health services from our Malaga & Noranda clinics.

Q: What causes Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18)?
Edwards Syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 18. This genetic anomaly occurs randomly during the formation of reproductive cells and leads to developmental abnormalities.
Edwards Syndrome is typically diagnosed through prenatal testing such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). After birth, a diagnosis can be confirmed with genetic testing.
There is no cure for Edwards Syndrome, but early intervention and supportive care can help improve the quality of life for individuals affected by this condition.
Physiotherapy helps individuals with Edwards Syndrome improve motor function, muscle strength, and flexibility. It focuses on preventing joint contractures and supporting mobility through personalized exercises.
Occupational therapy helps individuals with Trisomy 18 develop the skills necessary for daily activities, such as eating, dressing, and self-care. It also focuses on recommending adaptive equipment to enhance independence.
Individuals with Edwards Syndrome often experience speech delays and may benefit from speech therapy to improve language development. For those with severe communication difficulties, alternative communication methods may be recommended.
At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, we provide personalised allied health support for children and adults with a wide range of physical, developmental, rehabilitation, communication, sensory, and functional needs.
