PALMS PHYSIOTHERAPY & ALLIED HEALTH
Sometimes a scan can help clarify what’s happening—especially when symptoms aren’t improving as expected, the clinical picture is unclear, or we need to rule out certain conditions. At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health (Malaga), our physiotherapists can assess your injury, advise whether imaging is clinically indicated, and help coordinate an appropriate referral pathway where needed.
We always aim to use imaging thoughtfully. Many musculoskeletal conditions can be managed effectively with clinical assessment and rehabilitation without scans. Where imaging is helpful, we’ll explain why, what it can (and can’t) show, and how it may influence management.

Imaging may be considered when it is likely to change management, for example:
Significant trauma (e.g., suspected fracture/dislocation)
Red flags (see below) or symptoms requiring medical escalation
Persistent symptoms that are not improving with appropriate care
Suspected significant tendon rupture/tear, serious ligament injury, or specific structural concerns
Unclear diagnosis after examination
Pre/post-surgical planning (in collaboration with your medical/specialist team)
Monitoring specific conditions where imaging is part of best-practice pathways
A scan is not always necessary and can sometimes show findings that are common in people without pain (incidental findings). We’ll help interpret results in the context of your symptoms and function.
The most appropriate scan depends on your presentation. Common imaging types include:
Often used to assess bones and joints (e.g., fractures, alignment, some arthritic changes).
Commonly used for tendons, muscles, bursae, and some ligament structures. It can be useful for dynamic assessment in some situations.
Used when we need a detailed view of soft tissue structures (e.g., complex tendon/ligament/cartilage concerns).
Medicare rebates and referral requirements vary—MRI often requires a GP/specialist referral for Medicare funding.
Used for more detailed bony assessment in certain presentations.
As with MRI, referral pathways and rebates may require GP/specialist involvement.
In some cases, other investigations may be recommended by your GP/specialist (e.g., blood tests for inflammatory conditions). We can support coordination and rehab, but medical practitioners order and interpret these tests.
We support children, adults and older adults with disability, injury, chronic conditions, developmental concerns, communication needs, mobility challenges and rehabilitation goals.
In many settings, physiotherapists can provide imaging recommendations and may be able to issue referrals for certain scans depending on the imaging provider and scan type.
However:
Medicare rebate eligibility and referral rules depend on the modality and your circumstances.
Some scans may require a GP or specialist referral for Medicare-funded imaging, and some providers have their own referral requirements.
At Palms, we will:
Tell you whether imaging is likely to help
Explain which scan is most appropriate
Guide you to the correct referral pathway (physio referral where accepted, or GP/specialist referral when required)
Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health offers a range of therapy services and specialised supports. You can browse by therapy area, explore specialised services, or learn more about the facilities and equipment we use in-clinic .
We assess your symptoms, function, history, and physical findings.
We explain:
Why we are (or aren’t) recommending a scan
What the scan can and can’t show
How results may influence your rehab plan
Expected timeframes and next steps
Where appropriate, we can:
Provide a referral accepted by participating imaging providers (scan type dependent), or
Recommend you see your GP/specialist for a referral pathway required for Medicare rebates or specific modalities
We use results to refine your plan, but we also treat the whole picture—pain, function, goals, and what you need to return to activity safely.
Imaging results should always be interpreted alongside clinical assessment. A scan alone does not diagnose the whole problem.
Find the right support by discipline, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, exercise physiology and other allied health services.
Support for daily living skills, sensory needs, functional independence, equipment, home supports & participation at home, school, work & in the community.
Assessment, diagnosis & treatment for pain, injuries, rehabilitation, mobility, strength & physical function across all ages.
Clinical exercise programs to support chronic condition management, strength, mobility, fitness, rehabilitation & function.
Assessment & therapy for communication, speech, language, social communication, voice & swallowing support.
Please seek urgent GP/ED review if you have:
Suspected fracture/dislocation after trauma
Severe pain with inability to weight-bear
Loss of bowel/bladder control, saddle numbness, or progressive weakness
Fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or severe unwellness with pain
Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms
Signs of infection in a joint (hot, swollen, severe pain + fever)
Physiotherapy can be part of your care, but urgent red flags require immediate medical assessment.
Costs vary by scan type and provider. Medicare rebates may apply only when referral requirements are met (often via GP/specialist for certain modalities). Private imaging providers may have different billing practices.
We can help you understand the likely pathway and what to ask the imaging provider before booking.
If you’re unsure whether you need imaging—or want clear guidance on the most appropriate scan—book a physiotherapy assessment and we’ll help you make an informed plan.
