Shockwave Therapy - also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) - is a non-invasive treatment we may use alongside physiotherapy and exercise rehabilitation to help manage persistent tendon and soft tissue pain. It uses acoustic waves applied to the affected area to support the body’s natural healing response and improve tolerance to movement and loading.
Typical session time is usually 6–8 minutes (plus assessment and set-up) and it is delivered by: a qualified Physiotherapist.
Shockwave Therapy delivers focused acoustic waves to targeted tissue. In clinical practice, ESWT is commonly used for tendon-related pain and selected soft tissue conditions, particularly where symptoms have persisted despite appropriate loading, rehabilitation and time.
Shockwave is used with the aim of supporting:
local circulation and tissue metabolism
tendon remodeling and loading tolerance
pain modulation (reducing pain sensitivity to enable rehab progress)
breakdown of some calcific deposits in selected presentations
Important: Shockwave works best as part of a broader plan that includes assessment, education, graded strengthening and return-to-activity planning.
Shockwave may be considered for a range of persistent tendon and soft tissue presentations, such as:
Plantar fasciitis / heel pain
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylalgia)
Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain
Achilles and other tendinopathies (case-by-case)
selected calcific tendon conditions (where appropriate)
If you’re unsure whether your condition is suitable, we’ll assess and guide you.
Shockwave treatment is quick. A typical appointment includes:
Clinical assessment and suitability check
Treatment application to the target area (usually 6–8 minutes)
Rehab integration — we’ll update your exercises/plan so the treatment translates into better function
Many people describe shockwave as uncomfortable rather than painful, and intensity is adjusted to your tolerance and clinical presentation.
Treatment plans vary, but shockwave is commonly delivered as a short course.
We’ll monitor outcomes (pain, function, activity tolerance) and adjust the plan rather than chasing a set number of sessions.
Shockwave isn’t appropriate for everyone. We screen for factors such as:
pregnancy
bleeding disorders or anticoagulant use
local infection/open wounds
certain nerve or vascular concerns
active malignancy in the target area
recent injections or surgery (timing dependent)
If you have questions about suitability, contact our team and we’ll guide you before booking.
At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, shockwave is used as an adjunct to a clear rehab plan:
evidence-based assessment and diagnosis
education and self-management strategies
graded strengthening and load progression
return-to-work / return-to-sport planning where relevant
We focus on practical outcomes: less pain, better function, and more confidence in day-to-day life.
Shockwave therapy is available at our Noranda clinic only.
Does shockwave hurt?
It can feel uncomfortable. We adjust intensity to your tolerance and clinical presentation.
Can I exercise after treatment?
Often yes, but we may modify loading for 24–48 hours depending on the tissue and plan.
Is shockwave a stand-alone fix?
It’s best used alongside a structured rehab program (strengthening, mobility, load management).
At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, our experienced team is here to help children and adults manage their condition and improve their quality of life.
