PALMS PHYSIOTHERAPY & ALLIED HEALTH
Stress fractures are small cracks in a bone caused by repetitive overloading. The fibula serves as a stabilizing bone for the lower leg and ankle. While it bears less weight than the tibia, it is still susceptible to fractures, particularly in active individuals.
Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health offers a range of therapy services and specialised supports. You can browse by therapy area, explore specialised services, or learn more about the facilities and equipment we use in-clinic .
Overuse and Overtraining
Rapidly increasing physical activity without proper conditioning.
Biomechanical Issues
Misalignments, such as overpronation or supination, can place excessive stress on the fibula.
Inappropriate Footwear
Shoes that lack adequate support can fail to absorb shock effectively.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Low calcium or vitamin D levels can weaken bones, making them more susceptible to fractures.
Poor Training Surfaces
Running or exercising on hard or uneven surfaces increases the risk.
Low Bone Density
Conditions like osteoporosis can predispose individuals to stress fractures.
Localized pain along the outer lower leg that worsens with activity.
Tenderness or swelling over the fibula.
Pain that intensifies with weight-bearing activities and eases with rest.
In severe cases, discomfort may persist even during rest.
Diagnosis involves:
Medical History Review
Assessing activity levels, diet, and any underlying conditions.
Physical Examination
Identifying areas of tenderness, swelling, and movement-related pain.
Imaging Studies
X-rays may not initially show stress fractures; MRI or bone scans are more sensitive.
