Real-Time Ultrasound (RTUS) is a non-invasive imaging tool that provides live visual feedback of muscles and soft tissues.
In physiotherapy, RTUS can be used to assess and retrain pelvic floor and deep core muscle function, and to support selected musculoskeletal rehabilitation goals - helping you understand what your muscles are doing and how to change activation patterns with confidence.
RTUS uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of soft tissues. A handheld probe is placed on the skin over the area being assessed (commonly the lower abdomen/pelvic region), and the image appears on a screen so you and your clinician can observe muscle activity as it happens.
RTUS is often used to improve:
accuracy of assessment (seeing whether a muscle is underactive, overactive, or not coordinating well)
motor control and retraining (learning how to activate and relax muscles more effectively)
progress tracking over time (visual feedback makes change easier to measure and explain)
Think of it as a “biofeedback tool” that helps turn confusing cues into something you can actually see.
RTUS is commonly used to support pelvic floor physiotherapy when symptoms relate to pelvic floor coordination and core control. Your current page lists examples such as:
urinary incontinence
pelvic pain
difficulty activating core muscles
prolapse management support
post-pregnancy rehabilitation
Using RTUS, your physiotherapist can help you better understand:
whether you’re activating the right muscles
whether you can relax them when needed
how the pelvic floor and deep core work together during movement and breathing
RTUS can be helpful for a broad range of people, including:
women during and after pregnancy (including pelvic floor changes and abdominal separation/diastasis recti)
people experiencing pelvic pain (to explore muscle tension/coordination)
athletes working on core control and injury prevention strategies
post-surgical rehabilitation involving pelvic/abdominal recovery
men with pelvic floor concerns, including post-prostatectomy rehabilitation
We support children, adults and older adults with disability, injury, chronic conditions, developmental concerns, communication needs, mobility challenges and rehabilitation goals.
Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health offers a range of therapy services and specialised supports. You can browse by therapy area, explore specialised services, or learn more about the facilities and equipment we use in-clinic .
A typical RTUS appointment may include:
Initial assessment (history, symptoms, goals)
RTUS assessment using a handheld probe on the skin over the target area
Education + retraining (guided practice of activation/relaxation and coordination strategies)
A home plan to carry skills into daily activity, exercise, and function
RTUS is painless and does not use radiation (it’s an ultrasound-based tool).
RTUS is typically one part of a broader physiotherapy program, which may include:
pelvic floor exercises (strengthening or relaxation strategies)
education for breathing, posture, and muscle activation
manual therapy where appropriate
graded exercise and lifestyle strategies tailored to your goals
Find the right support by discipline, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, exercise physiology and other allied health services.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required — you can book directly.
How long is a session?
Sessions typically run 30–60 minutes, depending on your needs.
Can RTUS help with post-pregnancy recovery?
RTUS may be used to support post-pregnancy rehabilitation (including pelvic floor coordination and abdominal muscle retraining) where clinically appropriate.
If you’d like to explore whether RTUS is suitable for your pelvic floor or core goals, book an appointment and we’ll guide you through the right next steps
