Mobility concerns describe difficulties with moving safely and efficiently. This can include challenges with:
Walking speed, endurance, or confidence
Balance and falls risk
Transfers (e.g., sit-to-stand, bed transfers)
Stairs, uneven surfaces, or community access
Strength, coordination, or motor control
Using mobility aids (e.g., cane, walker, wheelchair)
Mobility needs can be temporary (e.g., after injury or surgery) or longer-term (e.g., disability or neurological conditions).
You might notice:
Frequent trips, stumbles, or falls
Needing to hold onto furniture/walls at home
Unsteady walking, shuffling, or reduced foot clearance
Difficulty standing from a chair, getting off the floor, or climbing stairs
Pain that limits movement or causes “avoidance” of activity
Reduced stamina or breathlessness with walking short distances
Avoiding outings due to fear of falling or fatigue
In children: delays in gross motor milestones, low movement confidence, or clumsy movement patterns
Mobility challenges can have many contributing factors, including:
Pain, joint stiffness, weakness, injury recovery, arthritis, or post-operative rehabilitation.
Conditions affecting movement control, strength, coordination, and balance. See our broader library:
Neurological Conditions
Reduced balance strategies, confidence with movement, coordination differences, and sensory-motor integration challenges.
Mobility may be affected by disability, developmental coordination profiles, tone differences, or functional capacity changes.
Reduced activity over time (or after illness/injury) can affect strength, endurance, and walking confidence.
Seek prompt GP/urgent medical care if mobility changes are sudden or severe, especially with:
New facial droop, slurred speech, sudden weakness or numbness
New severe dizziness, collapse, or fainting
Chest pain or new significant breathlessness
Acute severe pain, inability to weight-bear, or suspected fracture
Rapidly worsening walking ability without a clear reason
Allied health support can still be helpful, but urgent medical red flags should be assessed first.
We support children, adults & older adults with disability, injury, chronic conditions, developmental concerns, communication needs, mobility challenges and rehabilitation goals.
A falls and balance clinic focuses on identifying the factors contributing to falls risk and building a personalised rehabilitation plan to improve:
Balance reactions and stability
Lower limb strength and endurance
Walking & Mobility confidence and gait efficiency
Safe transfers (sit-to-stand, getting in/out of bed, steps)
Falls risk awareness and practical prevention strategies
Balance is rarely “just one thing.” It can be influenced by strength, vision, inner ear/vestibular function, sensation in the feet, joint mobility, medication effects, neurological factors, and confidence.
You might notice:
Feeling unsteady on your feet or veering to one side
Frequent trips, stumbles, or needing to “grab” furniture
Difficulty with stairs, uneven ground, or low light
Reduced walking speed or shuffling gait
Fear of falling or avoiding outings because of confidence
Recent falls (even if you weren’t injured)
Difficulty standing up from a chair or getting off the floor
Feeling dizzy when turning, bending, or getting out of bed (needs assessment)
If these issues are affecting daily life, targeted assessment can help clarify what’s driving the problem and what will help most.
