At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, we provide Assistive Technology (AT) assessments, recommendations and supporting documentation to help children, adults and older adults improve safety, comfort, independence and participation in everyday life.
Assistive Technology can include a wide range of equipment and supports — from simpler items used in day-to-day routines through to more specialised equipment that may require clinical assessment, trials and detailed justification.
Our approach is person-centred and practical. We focus on how the person functions in real life, what they need to do each day, and what supports may help make tasks safer, easier and more achievable.
Assistive Technology (AT) refers to equipment, devices or supports that help a person:
complete daily tasks more safely
improve comfort and positioning
move around more easily
increase independence at home, school, work or in the community
reduce barriers to participation
The right AT is different for everyone. Recommendations are based on the person’s goals, needs, environment and functional presentation.
We can assist with:
Clinical assessment to identify AT needs
Recommendations for appropriate equipment/supports
Trials (where appropriate or required)
Letters of support / clinical reports
Liaison with suppliers and relevant stakeholders (as needed)
Follow-up review once equipment is in place (where required)
Depending on your goals and needs, AT may include supports related to:
Seating and positioning
Mobility and movement
Transfers and daily living tasks
Bedroom / sleep setup
Home safety and functional independence
Participation at school, work or in the community
We will recommend the most appropriate clinician (e.g., OT, Physio, or Speech Pathologist) depending on the type of support required and the person’s goals.
The time required for an AT assessment and report can vary significantly depending on:
the complexity of the person’s needs
the type of equipment being considered
whether trials are required
the number of stakeholders involved
supplier availability
the level of documentation needed
Some AT requests are relatively straightforward, while others require more detailed assessment, trial coordination and reporting.
If you’re not sure what type of AT assessment or documentation is needed, contact our team and we can help guide you.
Where clinically appropriate, we can provide clinical assessment and supporting documentation for funding applications, reviews or planning processes.
Please note: Final approval and funding decisions are made by the relevant funding body (e.g., NDIA where applicable).
