PALMS PHYSIOTHERAPY & ALLIED HEALTH
Reduce pain & stiffness, improve mobility & strength with tailored rehab & joint protection
Psoriatic arthritis can cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and fatigue, and symptoms can fluctuate over time. At Palms Physiotherapy & Allied Health, we provide individualised, evidence-informed physiotherapy and exercise-based rehabilitation to support mobility, strength, joint protection, and everyday function—so you can keep doing the activities that matter to you.
Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory arthritis associated with psoriasis in some people (skin and/or nail changes). It can affect:
Peripheral joints (hands, wrists, knees, ankles, feet)
Tendons/entheses (where tendons/ligaments attach to bone)
The spine or pelvis (in some people)
Overall energy levels and function (fatigue is common)
Important: Psoriatic arthritis is a medical condition typically diagnosed and managed by a GP and/or rheumatologist. Allied health supports symptom management, function, and participation alongside medical care.
Symptoms vary, but may include:
Joint pain, swelling, warmth, and stiffness (often worse in the morning)
“Flare-ups” and periods of improvement
Tendon/enthesis pain (e.g., heel pain, elbow pain)
Reduced grip strength or hand function
Back or buttock pain/stiffness (for some people)
Fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance
Nail changes (pitting, lifting) or psoriasis (not always present)
If you’re not sure whether symptoms are inflammatory, a clinical assessment and GP review is recommended.
We support children, adults & older adults with disability, injury, chronic conditions, developmental concerns, communication needs, mobility challenges and rehabilitation goals.
Symptoms often fluctuate. We can help you plan:
How to adjust activity during a flare without stopping all movement
How to return to higher loads safely after symptoms settle
How to avoid “boom–bust” cycles that worsen pain and fatigue
Your plan is adapted to your current symptom level and goals.
Seek prompt medical attention if you have:
A very hot, swollen joint with fever or severe pain (possible infection)
Sudden inability to weight-bear after injury
New chest pain, fainting, or severe shortness of breath
Rapid, unexplained worsening of symptoms
Learn more: Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for PsA focuses on building capacity safely, improving movement quality, and supporting joint health over time.
Strength and stability programs to support affected joints
Mobility and range of motion work to reduce stiffness
Progressive loading for tendons/entheses (when appropriate)
Activity modification and pacing strategies (especially during flares)
Joint protection and movement efficiency strategies
Pain-informed rehabilitation planning
Return-to-work, sport, and daily activity support
Your plan is tailored to your symptoms, current flare status, fitness level, and goals.
Exercise physiology can be valuable for structured conditioning and long-term exercise habits, particularly where fatigue, deconditioning, or chronic pain patterns are present.
Exercise physiology may support:
Strength and aerobic conditioning with safe progression
Fatigue-aware training plans and pacing
Building confidence with exercise during fluctuating symptoms
Sustainable routines to support function and wellbeing

If PsA affects hands, wrists, daily tasks, or work demands, OT may help with functional strategies.
Learn more: Occupational Therapy
OT may assist with:
Joint protection and task modification
Ergonomic strategies and equipment recommendations (when indicated)
Hand function supports and daily-living routines
Energy conservation strategies during high-fatigue periods

Speech pathology is not routinely required for Psoriatic arthritis. In some cases, it may be relevant if a person experiences:
Jaw/TMJ-related issues affecting communication or eating, or
Swallowing concerns (for example, where other medical factors are involved)
If these issues are present, assessment determines the appropriate pathway and whether referral to medical teams is needed.
